🚸🚗 TWO MAPLEWOOD JUVENILES STRUCK BY VEHICLES IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS 🚨
Maplewood police responded to two separate crashes involving children last week. One student was injured while crossing outside a crosswalk near the middle school, and a cyclist was struck by a driver who was later ticketed for a crosswalk violation.
MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Maplewood police responded to two separate incidents involving juveniles being struck by vehicles last week, including one crash near a local middle school.
🚨 INCIDENT NEAR MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL
The first incident happened on September 15 near Maplewood Middle School on Baker Street.
According to police, the driver told officers a juvenile attempted to cross Baker Street and struck the vehicle’s passenger side mirror before falling to the ground.
The juvenile suffered an abrasion above the left eye, an abrasion to the left elbow and an injury around the left foot area.
Police said the juvenile acknowledged that they were not using the designated crosswalk when attempting to cross the roadway.
The juvenile’s parents were notified and responded to the school. The youth was later transported to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston for evaluation.
🚲🚗 JUVENILE CYCLIST STRUCK
The following day, September 16, officers responded to Valley Street and Park Avenue for another incident involving a juvenile.
Police said a juvenile riding a bicycle was in a crosswalk when they were struck by a vehicle. The driver reportedly told officers they hit the cyclist while attempting to turn from Valley Street onto Park Avenue.
EMS personnel responded to the scene. The juvenile’s father also arrived and, according to police, declined medical treatment for the child.
The driver was issued summonses related to New Jersey traffic statutes 39:4-97 and 39:4-36.
