Two Toms River Department of Public Works employees are being praised for assisting a 6-year-old boy after his mother suffered a medical emergency. The workers comforted the child and ensured he arrived safely for his first day of school.
📍 TOMS RIVER, NJ — Two Toms River Township Department of Public Works employees are being praised for their quick thinking and compassion after stepping in to help a 6-year-old boy whose mother experienced a medical episode while they were walking to school.
The incident happened on September 3, as the mother and her son were making their way to East Dover Elementary School for the first day of school, according to township and school officials.
🚑 Emergency medical services were called to assist the mother. Officials did not release additional information about her condition, citing privacy concerns.
As first responders attended to the woman, school officials said the young boy was visibly upset and in distress.
That's when Ed Reed and Louis Kempker, two township public works employees who were nearby in a township vehicle, stepped in to help.
According to East Dover Elementary Principal Matthew Gray, Reed took control of the situation with a calm and caring demeanor. He comforted the child, helped him safely cross the busy intersection at Vaughn Avenue, and made sure he arrived at school safely and on time.
Kempker, who was driving the township truck, also provided support during the situation.
❤️ School and township officials praised the employees for taking time during their workday to assist a child during what could have been a frightening and traumatic experience.
“We are tremendously appreciative of the quick and compassionate work of Mr. Reed and Mr. Kempker,” said Michael Kenny, a spokesman for the Toms River Regional School District.
Toms River Mayor Daniel Rodrick also recognized the employees for their actions.
“We thank Ed and Louis for their extraordinary act of service,” Rodrick said. “Toms River is fortunate to have these gentlemen serving our community.”
👏 Their actions are a reminder that sometimes making a difference in someone's day can be as simple as stopping to help when someone needs it most.
