š STOLEN BMW CHASE THROUGH WARREN ENDS WITH 4 ARRESTS šØ
Four Newark men were arrested early Thursday after leading police on a chase through Warren Township in a stolen BMW. The pursuit ended on Interstate 78 when the vehicle became disabled, and the suspects were captured following a brief foot race.
WARREN TOWNSHIP, NJ ā Four Newark men were arrested early Thursday morning after police said they pursued a stolen BMW from Warren Township onto Interstate 78.
According to Warren Township Police Chief Robert W. Ferreiro, officers were alerted around 2 a.m. when an automated license plate reader detected a stolen BMW X3 entering the township.
Warren and Bernards Township officers located the vehicle shortly afterward near Liberty Corner Road. Police said the BMW fled when officers attempted to stop it, leading to a pursuit.
Officers deployed tire-deflation devices during the chase, but police said the BMW continued onto Interstate 78 East. The pursuit continued for several miles before the vehicle became disabled near Exit 40.
Police identified the driver as Kaleem N. Blue, 20, of Newark, who allegedly fled from the disabled vehicle on foot. Officers caught him after a brief foot pursuit.
Three additional occupants also attempted to flee, according to police. They were identified as Shamel S. Souvenir, 19; Brandon A. Brown-Shaw, 24; and Al-Rahman I. Howard, 18, all of Newark.
Police said Blue faces charges including receiving a stolen motor vehicle, conspiracy to receive a stolen motor vehicle, eluding, resisting arrest, credit card theft and possession of burglar's tools.
Souvenir, Brown-Shaw and Howard were each charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, conspiracy to receive a stolen motor vehicle and possession of burglar's tools.
The investigation involved Warren Township and Bernards Township police, with assistance from the New Jersey State Police.
Chief Ferreiro credited the participating agencies and said the department will continue working with law enforcement partners to investigate vehicle thefts and other criminal activity affecting the community.
