Somerville police arrested Ignacio Espinal for the fatal stabbing of his wife, Alyne Espinal, at their home on August 6. The fifty-five-year-old man faces first-degree murder charges and is currently being held at the Somerset County Jail.
SOMERVILLE, NJ — A 55-year-old Somerville man has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of his wife earlier this month, authorities announced.
Somerville Police responded to a 9-1-1 call around 7:26 p.m. on August 6, 2026, for a welfare concern at a residence on Brookside Avenue. Officers found 46-year-old Alyne Espinal suffering from multiple lacerations to her chest, neck and thigh.
Alyne Espinal was pronounced dead at the scene. A subsequent postmortem examination determined that her death was a homicide.
Detectives with the Somerville Police Department and Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes and Crime Scene Investigation units, along with medical investigators, worked the case.
As a result of the investigation, Ignacio Espinal was arrested without incident on August 11 in West New York. He was transported to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office for processing before being lodged in the Somerset County Jail.
Espinal has been charged with:
🔴 1st-Degree Murder 🔴 3rd-Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose 🔴 3rd-Degree Hindering
He is being held pending a detention hearing.
Authorities credited numerous agencies with assisting in the investigation, including police departments in Union City, West New York, Paterson and New York City, the Port Authority Police, Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and multiple FBI task forces.
