New Jersey officials are investigating reports of federal immigration activity at a Roxbury warehouse. The state is checking if U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement violated a court order that restricts construction while legal challenges against a proposed detention center continue.
📍 ROXBURY TOWNSHIP, NJ — New Jersey officials are reviewing reports of activity involving federal immigration authorities at a Morris County warehouse that has been at the center of an ongoing legal dispute over plans for an immigration detention facility.
The warehouse, located at 1879 Route 46 in Roxbury Township, was targeted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for conversion into a detention facility earlier this year. New Jersey and Roxbury Township subsequently challenged the plans in federal court.
According to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, federal officials agreed in May that additional environmental review would be conducted before moving forward with the proposed facility. The agreement allowed limited maintenance and security-related work at the property but prohibited interior construction or conversion into a detention facility at that time.
The issue resurfaced after reports of increased ICE activity in and around the warehouse. The Attorney General’s Office said it is reviewing those reports and indicated that converting the property into a detention facility while the restrictions remain in place would violate the court order.
However, officials have not publicly specified what activity is allegedly taking place at the site, meaning it is not currently clear whether the reported activity involves detention operations, planning, maintenance, or another purpose.
A community organization, the Sussex Visibility Brigade, has also reported what it describes as increased ICE activity in the area.
Meanwhile, DHS has declined to provide additional details, citing the ongoing litigation.
🏛️ THE LEGAL BACKGROUND
New Jersey and Roxbury Township filed a federal lawsuit in March seeking to stop the proposed conversion. The state alleged that the project raised issues involving environmental review, water and sewage infrastructure, transportation and other local impacts.
