🚨🛋️ PATERSON MAN CHARGED AFTER $6,000 FURNITURE PURCHASE ALLEGEDLY ENDS IN FRAUD 🛋️🚨

📍 FAIRFIELD, NJ — A 26-year-old Paterson man has been charged following an investigation into an alleged fraudulent furniture purchase totaling approximately $6,000 at a Fairfield business.

The Fairfield Police Department said the investigation began on July 16, 2026, after the owner of Creative Furniture, located at 491 Route 46, reported a suspicious transaction.

According to police, Promise Carter, 26, of Paterson, allegedly entered the business and agreed to purchase approximately $6,000 worth of bedroom furniture.

Police said the credit card initially presented by Carter was repeatedly declined. Investigators allege Carter then manually entered a credit card number into the store's payment terminal, completing three separate $2,000 transactions, all of which were approved.

The furniture was subsequently picked up.

Shortly afterward, the business reportedly received chargebacks for all three transactions, resulting in an estimated $6,000 loss.

🔎 The investigation was assigned to Fairfield Detective Daniel Moran, who police said reviewed witness statements, U-Haul records, subpoena results, database information and video evidence obtained from another law enforcement agency.

Investigators ultimately identified Carter as the individual allegedly responsible for the transactions.

Carter was charged with:

🔴 Third-degree theft 🔴 Third-degree theft by deception 🔴 Third-degree credit card fraud

The charges were issued on a summons.

Fairfield Police Public Information Officer Corporal David Lagan said the investigation demonstrates the work detectives often continue after an initial report is filed, including reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses and following additional investigative leads.
