The New Jersey Department of Corrections is mourning Correctional Police Sergeant James Lawson, who died on August 18 after 29 years of service. Lawson worked at several state facilities during his career, most recently serving at the Garden State Correctional Facility.
The New Jersey Department of Corrections is mourning the loss of Correctional Police Sergeant James Lawson, who passed away on August 18, 2026.
Sergeant Lawson began his career with the NJDOC on June 7, 1997, at Riverfront State Prison. After nearly a decade of service, he was promoted to Correctional Police Sergeant in February 2007.
Throughout his 29 years of dedicated service, Lawson served at multiple NJDOC facilities, including Riverfront State Prison, Southern State Prison, Central Medical Unit, Bayside State Prison, and Garden State Correctional Facility.
He had been assigned to Garden State Correctional Facility since June 2022, where he continued serving until his untimely passing.
Sergeant Lawson leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service to the New Jersey Department of Corrections. He will be deeply missed by his fellow officers, colleagues, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him.
