🚨 NEWARK MAN CONVICTED AFTER FIRING GUN AT MAN AND CHASING HIM DOWN CITY STREET
A jury convicted 53-year-old Shamsuddin Lockett for firing a gun at a man and chasing him through Newark in February 2024. The persistent offender faces up to 20 years in state prison at his October sentencing.

A 53-year-old Newark man has been convicted of firing a handgun at another man and chasing him down a city street during an incident in 2024, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
A jury convicted Shamsuddin Lockett on August 14 of aggravated assault and multiple weapons offenses. Prosecutors said the jury also determined that Lockett qualifies as a persistent offender, which could increase the potential sentence.
🔫 THE INCIDENT
According to prosecutors, Lockett was pacing along Elizabeth Avenue during the morning hours of February 23, 2024, apparently waiting for someone.
At approximately 7:10 a.m., a man approached from East Alpine Street. Prosecutors said Lockett pulled a handgun from his pocket and fired a single shot toward the man.
Fortunately, the victim was not struck by the gunfire and immediately ran from the area.
🚨 Prosecutors said Lockett chased after the man but was unable to locate him. He eventually left the area and called a car service.
Investigators later used surveillance video and cellphone records to identify Lockett, leading to his arrest.
⚖️ SENTENCING
Lockett is scheduled to be sentenced on October 19. He faces a possible 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison.
The case was prosecuted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
