📍 NEWARK, NJ — New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport has announced a civil rights investigation into conditions and practices at Delaney Hall, a private immigration detention facility in Newark operated by The GEO Group, Inc.
The New Jersey Division on Civil Rights (DCR) has issued investigative subpoenas as part of the inquiry. Officials say the investigation will examine whether actions or failures by GEO Group employees may have violated the civil rights of people detained at the facility.
The investigation follows reports concerning allegedly alarming conditions and recent deaths at Delaney Hall.
⚖️ Officials say the inquiry will focus on whether detained individuals received the humane treatment and adequate medical care required under New Jersey law.
🗣️ Attorney General Davenport said the state has both a legal and moral responsibility to protect the civil rights of people in New Jersey, including individuals held at privately operated detention facilities.
🔎 The investigation is expected to examine whether civil rights violations occurred. If violations are identified, the Attorney General's Office says appropriate civil enforcement action could be pursued under the New Jersey Civil Rights Act (NJCRA) and the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD).
🏥 The announcement comes as separate litigation continues between the New Jersey Department of Health and GEO Group. The Attorney General filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Health Department in June seeking a court order requiring GEO Group to provide state officials access to Delaney Hall for health inspections.
