Hardyston Elementary School will likely remain closed for weeks after officials discovered mold in several areas of the building. Students will temporarily move to the middle school while workers clean the facility and conduct further air quality tests.
š HARDYSTON, NJ ā The start of the new school year is being disrupted for students and staff in the Hardyston Township School District after mold was discovered inside Hardyston Elementary School.
According to Superintendent of Schools Jarlyn Veras, air quality and mold testing was conducted after concerns were raised about an odor and elevated humidity in two office areas.
Testing reportedly detected airborne mold spores in two offices. During the remediation process, additional mold was discovered in multiple other areas of the elementary school building.
š« Both Hardyston Elementary School and Hardyston Middle School are closed Tuesday while district officials work on a plan for relocating students and continuing remediation efforts.
The district plans to temporarily move elementary school students into the middle school while cleanup work is underway.
ā³ Superintendent Veras said the extent of the remediation could require students and staff to remain out of the elementary school building for several weeks.
In a statement, Veras emphasized that the health and safety of students and staff remain the district's top priority, while acknowledging the disruption the situation may cause for families.
Officials said there is currently no evidence of mold in the middle school, which is expected to serve as the temporary location for elementary students.
The district is continuing to develop its relocation and educational plans as remediation work moves forward.
