🚨 LAKEHURST MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO VEHICULAR HOMICIDE IN DEADLY TOMS RIVER CRASH 🚨
Douglas Smith of Lakehurst pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide for a 2025 crash that killed a construction worker in Toms River. Prosecutors are seeking a 10-year prison sentence because Smith was driving with drugs and alcohol in his system.

A 52-year-old Lakehurst man has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in connection with a 2025 crash that killed a construction worker in Toms River.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced that Douglas Smith, 52, of Lakehurst, pleaded guilty on August 31, 2026, before Superior Court Judge Kenneth T. Palmer.
⚠️ DEADLY CRASH
The crash happened around 1 a.m. on July 31, 2025, near Lakewood Road and Raymond Avenue in Toms River.
Responding Toms River police officers found 50-year-old Allen Adams of Lumberton Township seriously injured in the roadway. Adams was transported to Community Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined Adams had been working in a construction zone on Lakewood Road when he was struck by Smith’s northbound vehicle. Authorities said the construction machinery at the scene was equipped with flashing amber warning lights.
🚔 INVESTIGATION REVEALS IMPAIRMENT
Police located Smith’s vehicle shortly after the crash. According to investigators, Smith displayed signs of impairment when officers encountered him.
A court-authorized blood draw later showed Smith had a BAC of .151, well above New Jersey’s legal limit of .08. Authorities also reported that cocaine, fentanyl and methadone were detected in his system.
Smith was subsequently charged with vehicular homicide on August 28, 2025, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
👮 ARREST
On September 3, 2025, Smith was located at a Toms River residence by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office and Toms River Police Department.
He was taken into custody without incident and has remained detained at the Ocean County Jail since his arrest.
⚖️ SENTENCING
Smith is scheduled to be sentenced on October 23, 2026.
Prosecutors are seeking a 10-year sentence in New Jersey State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act (NERA).
The case was investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad and Toms River Township Police Department, with assistance from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force.
