The Fairfield Police Department announced the arrest of Deante Humphries, 40, of Dallas, Texas, following a traffic stop investigation that led to the recovery of an alleged illegal firearm. According to police, on July 31, 2026, at approximately 1:14 AM, Officer Ryan Cleary observed a 2024 Ford box truck traveling on Two Bridges Road that allegedly had no rear license plate and no rear lights illuminated. A motor vehicle stop was initiated on Route 46 West, where Humphries was identified as the driver and only occupant. During the investigation, officers reportedly became suspicious after Humphries allegedly provided conflicting accounts regarding his travels from Texas to New Jersey. A K-9 from the Essex County Sheriff's Department was requested, and police say a free-air sniff resulted in a positive indication near the passenger side door. Further investigation allegedly led to the discovery of a loaded FN Five-seveN semi-automatic handgun containing 27 rounds of 5.7x28mm ammunition. Humphries was placed under arrest and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of prohibited weapons and devices. He was also issued two motor vehicle summonses and later transferred to the Essex County Correctional Facility pending a Superior Court appearance. āš–ļø All charges are allegations. Deante Humphries is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
