BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ — August 18, 2026 — Berkeley Township Police have arrested a 24-year-old New York man in connection with an alleged scam targeting a senior citizen that resulted in the victim mailing a $50,000 cashier’s check to fraudsters.
Police said the investigation began after officers responded on August 14 to a residence in the Holiday City section of Berkeley Township for a reported theft.
According to investigators, the senior victim had been using her home computer earlier in the month when a fraudulent Microsoft error message suddenly appeared on her screen with a phone number to call.
After contacting the number, the victim allegedly spoke with a woman who falsely claimed to be a Microsoft representative and told her that her bank accounts had been compromised. The call was then transferred to a man who allegedly identified himself as a Wells Fargo employee.
The victim was subsequently convinced to mail a $50,000 cashier’s check.

Police said the suspects continued contacting the victim over the following days, allegedly posing as legitimate Microsoft and Wells Fargo employees in an effort to maintain her trust.
The victim eventually realized she had been targeted by a scam but continued communicating with the suspects while contacting Berkeley Township Police.
While officers were at the residence, the suspects allegedly requested an additional $30,000 and said they would send a courier to collect the money for safekeeping.
Detectives and members of the Berkeley Township Patrol Division then established surveillance around the residence.
During the surveillance operation, investigators observed a gray Toyota RAV4 drive past the home and leave the area before returning shortly afterward and parking one house away.
Police said the victim then received a call stating that the courier had arrived.
