📢 ANTI-ICE PROTESTS HELD IN MONTCLAIR AND BLOOMFIELD FOLLOWING RECENT IMMIGRATION ARRESTS
Dozens of residents protested in Montclair and Bloomfield this week following the federal detention of two local restaurant workers. Demonstrators called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and criticized safety conditions at a Newark detention facility.
📍 MONTCLAIR & BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Demonstrators gathered in Montclair and Bloomfield this week as local immigration advocates continued protesting federal immigration enforcement following the detention of two restaurant workers in Montclair.
On August 19, federal immigration agents detained six people in the area, including two employees of Raymond’s on Church Street in Montclair, according to local reports. Authorities said the detentions were part of routine immigration enforcement and alleged that those detained had unlawfully entered the United States.
The arrests prompted criticism from immigration advocates, family members and local officials, who dispute characterizations that detainees are primarily dangerous criminals.
🇺🇸 LOCAL ADVOCATES SPEAK OUT
New Jersey Assemblywoman Alixon Collazos-Gill, who represents Montclair and surrounding communities, said the two restaurant workers currently being held at Delaney Hall in Newark should not be characterized as criminals.
She described them as hardworking members of the community and called for them to be treated with dignity and respect.
The issue has also become part of a larger national debate over immigration enforcement, with federal officials maintaining that ICE is focused on individuals who pose the greatest public-safety threats.
✊ MONTCLAIR PROTEST
A demonstration was held Sunday near the location where the two workers were taken into federal custody.
Protesters carried signs opposing ICE, including messages calling for the agency to be abolished. Others displayed patriotic messages expressing their opposition to the federal immigration crackdown.
🕯️ BLOOMFIELD VIGIL
In neighboring Bloomfield, community members gathered Saturday at the Historic Park on the Green for a vigil organized by the Bloomfield Immigrant Justice Network.
Participants held candles, delivered speeches and called for the defunding of ICE and the closure of Delaney Hall.
Demonstrators also displayed photographs of Jean Wilson Brutus, Edwin Jovanny Lopez Cornejo and Jose Chajon-Raxon, three detainees who protesters say died while in ICE custody at Delaney Hall during the past year.
Federal authorities and representatives of GEO Group, which operates the facility, have denied allegations of mistreatment connected to the deaths.
The protests come amid an ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement, detention practices and the treatment of undocumented immigrants.
