Paramus police arrested 52-year-old Yancy Haywood during a Route 4 traffic stop after discovering he was a fugitive wanted for a 20-year-old attempted murder. Haywood allegedly used a false identity to evade capture before his arrest on Wednesday.
📍 PARAMUS, NJ — A traffic stop in Bergen County has led to the arrest of a man who police say had been wanted for more than two decades on an attempted murder charge.
Paramus police identified the suspect as 52-year-old Yancy Haywood of Paterson, who was taken into custody Wednesday after officers discovered he was allegedly wanted in connection with an attempted murder case dating back more than 20 years.
👮♂️ According to police, Officer Nicholas Perna stopped a gray Kia on Route 4 around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday after noticing that the vehicle's Florida license plates were partially obscured by a heavily tinted cover.
During the investigation, officers determined Haywood was allegedly using his brother's identity and provided false information to law enforcement.
🚔 Haywood was subsequently arrested and charged with the outstanding attempted murder warrant, along with providing false information to a law enforcement officer.
The arrest brings an end to a lengthy period during which authorities say Haywood remained wanted.
⚖️ All charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
