🐶💔 16 NEGLECTED DOGS RESCUED FROM ESSEX COUNTY HOME

NEWARK, NJ — September 4, 2026 — Sixteen dogs are receiving medical care after being discovered in what animal welfare officials described as a severely neglected hoarding situation inside a Newark home.

According to Associated Humane Societies (AHS), the dogs were found in extremely poor condition, with many described as severely matted and showing signs of what appeared to be months—or potentially years—of neglect.

The dogs were transported to the AHS facility in Tinton Falls, where staff immediately began assessing and treating each animal. 🩺🐾

Officials say several of the dogs require sedated grooming, along with veterinary examinations, vaccinations and additional medical care. Some of the animals are reportedly only a few months old.

🏠 AHS said the owner reportedly moved out of the residence approximately one month before the dogs were discovered. Neighbors had reportedly been doing what they could to help care for the animals, but officials said the condition of the dogs suggested the neglect had been occurring for much longer.

❤️ “The condition these dogs arrived in is heartbreaking, but they are finally safe and surrounded by people who are committed to giving them the care and compassion they deserve,” said Danielle Mania, Chief Operating Officer of Associated Humane Societies.

The dogs will become available for adoption once they are medically cleared. As of Wednesday, they were not yet ready for adoption as they continue their recovery.

🙏 AHS is seeking support for the dogs’ ongoing medical treatment and rehabilitation as they begin the long road toward recovery and finding new homes.
